According to Chilean legend the Caleuche is a ghost ship that sails the fjords of southern Chile, led by powerful sorcerers and crewed by sailors and fishermen lured aboard by its ghostly music and enslaved for all eternity. The ship sails at night, always full of lights and with the sounds of a party on board, but quickly disappears again, leaving no evidence of its presence. Those who see or hear the Caleuche but resist its call become a floating piece of wood or marine animal forever.

Tasting notes
Bright ruby red color with purple highlights. In the nose we find the typical aromas of the Carménère grape: raspberry, plum, pepper, and coffee accompanied with ripe black fruits and spices. A medium bodied wine, delicate and fruit-filled palate, with good structure and abundant tannins that leave a sweet, pleasant sensation. Some chocolate and light smokiness linger on the palate in the finish. Great with roasted meats, a burger, a BBQ, and roasted vegetables.

Description

Caleuche Reserva 100% Carménère from Maule Valley, Chile

The Maule Valley is located in the southern part of the Central Valley. This area, which has the largest area planted with vines in all of Chile, has a tradition of vine growing dating back to the 17th century. Running parallel to the Andes Mountains and the Coastal Mountain Range, the Maule Valley benefits from significant temperature variation between night and day and rainfall restricted to the winter months. These conditions allow healthy grapes, great concentration of color, flavors and aromas.

Ventolera Estate – A terroir for high-end wines
90 Hectares

The vines of Caleuche Reserva 100% Carménère are located in the San Javier commune, near Melozal in the Loncomilla River valley, 17 km west of the Pan-American highway. A warm climate zone, hot during the day but cooled by a strong breeze after midday which slightly attenuates the high temperatures making it ideal for red varieties.

The soil presents soft hills, sandy loam texture, with tufa at shallow depth. This meant that, before planting, the land had to be ploughed to break the tufa and improve the depth of the soil.
